Philip Lee

Co-Founder, READERS to EATERS

Philip Lee has been a board member of Slow Food USA since 2014. He co-lead Slow Food Seattle from 2012 to 2013 and continues to co-lead its school garden program. His work with Slow Food included introducing the Makah Ozette Potato, a Pacific Northwest Presidia, to school gardens. He also lead the community campaign for Washington Governor Jay Inslee to make a Proclamation for Food Literacy Month in September as a time to promote food education across the state.

Philip is the co-founder of READERS to EATERS, a Seattle area based independent book publisher with a mission to promote literacy about our food system, and family literacy through stories about food. His books include the award-winning “Food Heroes” series, which consists of Chef Roy Choi and the Street Food Remix, Alice Waters and the Trip to Delicious, and Farmer Will Allen and the Growing Table. Philip believes in building a better community through food, and works closely with schools, libraries, and park systems to become community food hubs. Prior to READERS to EATERS, he co-founded Lee & Low Books, an award-winning multicultural children’s book publisher with Rosa Parks among his authors.

Philip was born and raised in Hong Kong, where eating fresh was part of the local culture and his family kept live chickens, fish, and even eels (in the bathtub!) for special meals. He is a graduate of U.C. Berkeley and lives in Bellevue, Washington.
